Chapter 10

It Wasn’t The Mushrooms

Mankind could not rely on their senses, so they created their gods to give them discernment. But the false idols gave them false knowledge, which became common as mankind spread through the planet. Everything became in question after their gods had failed them. The forest never lied, even through their mysteries. As home to many species, both visible and invisible, the forest chose carefully those in which it gave its knowledge.

The thump of the drums and bass pulsated as Lav turned up the volume on her turntables. The party where she was DJing took place by an old abandoned barn that sat near the Jasmine River. Her friend was throwing a birthday party for her younger sister who had just turned twenty-one and Lav agreed to DJ for the night. She had her turntables on a stage that overlooked the crowd of people with the stream in the background.

Alcohol filled the plastic red cups which everyone had in their hand. The drunk young adults danced in a trance to Lav’s music. Jan danced up on a few local guys. The small-town natives favored her exotic looks. One especially drunk frat guy reached down her backside which gave Jan the queue to join her friend Lav on stage.

Lav put her music on autopilot and the two stepped away from the crowd of drunk dancers for a cigarette. They leaned up against the boards of the barn that faced the trickling water. Jan brought her friend a full cup of vodka and soda. Lav sipped her drink then lit up a cigarette.

“You seem popular,” Lav told Jan, making her laugh.

“These townies can’t hold their liquor… no offense.”

“These boys can’t hold their liquor,” Lav responded. “Us, women,” she then chugged the rest of her drink, “we know how to party.”

Jan gave her friend a cheer and the two returned to the crowd. They both danced on stage as Lav continued her set. The waving mosh of people pumped their fists in the air in rhythm to Lav’s music. She stood above them as the maestro of inhibitions. The smell of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana lifted from the crowd like water evaporating off a lake.

The music cuts out to a solo drum beat. Lav downs a shot of vodka from another plastic cup before she preps up a new song to blast through the speakers. An original mix of Lav’s that she produced using an old recording of her and her mother playing violin together. The strings came in on top of the drum beat making the crowd cheer. As she layered on synths and basses, the party reached its peak. The cocktail of drugs, music, and dancing created a youthful radiation amongst the party-goers.

Lav felt alive watching a wave of people soak in her song. She saw their hands rise and fall in unison as their bodies mingled and twisted with the strings of the violin. She peered through the crowd of people and as her glassy eyes focused on the treeline, she saw a glow.
